Ted Swinford, 1988 Olympian, World Champion, and 13-time US Rowing Elite National Champion serves as the Head Coach for HRA. Swinford, who holds a BA in Physical Education from the University of California at Berkeley, has coached masters, junior, and collegiate rowers. He is a life member of the Penn Athletic Club in Philadelphia and was inducted into the National Rowing Hall of Fame (Stoningham, CT) in January 1997.
A native of the Daytona Beach/Port Orange area, Coach Ashley began her love affair with rowing at the University of South Florida where she was an oarsman for three years while completing her Bachelor in Secondary Education. She has been teaching in the Volusia County School system since 2013 with a focus on social studies and now shares her love of crew by teaching young scholar athletes the finer techniques of the sport. Coach Ashley leads the HRA Middle School Rowing Team and coaches/rows with the HRA Masters crew.
Coach Deb joined the HRA Masters rowing program in January, 2018 and quickly found her natural place in the coxswain seat. As a supersonic jet instructor pilot in the US Air Force and a peak performance consultant for businesses and individuals across the country, Deb uses the psychology of motivation to empower people to discover the greatness that lies within. Deb holds a BS in Aerospace Engineering from Virginia Tech. She is also a 3rd degree black belt in Chinese Kempo Karate. Coach Deb serves as the MS Program Director, a coach for all 3 HRA programs, and a coxswain for the Masters’ Program.
Coach Sami grew up in a rowing family, with two brothers who rowed for the United States Naval Academy. She is a USRowing Level 2 Certified Coach as well as a masters rower for HRA. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Cincinnati and when not on the water, she serves as the Executive Director for the Volusia County Medical Society. Coach Sami and her husband Scott, a swim coach, are the parents of two amazing young sons, one of whom is carrying on the rowing family tradition as a heavyweight rower at Cornell University.
Coach Mesha comes to HRA from the University of Texas at Austin where she was an oarswoman for two years. Surgery sidelined her training for Nationals but after a successful recovery, she’s back in the boat as a Coach and Masters rower! When she’s not at the boathouse, Coach Mesha works with Harvest Interventions as a Behavioral Therapist. She earned her BSW at UT Austin and was a Daniels Fund Scholar, a four-year scholarship awarded to individuals who exhibit exceptional character, leadership and a commitment to serving their communities.
Coach Arman originally began rowing at Halifax Rowing Association in 2012 and quickly found an appreciation for the sport. His love of water-sport activities kept him competing in rowing throughout middle and high school. Attending Stetson University as a Health Science major with a minor in Biology, Coach Arman is planning to attend medical school with an eye towards a career as a Radiologist. Coach Arman helps lead the HRA High School Rowing Team and enjoys sharing his passion and knowledge of rowing with others.
